When was the last time you took a good look at your first aid supplies? OSHA requires employers to have a first aid program specific to the particular hazards their workers face and ANSI has updated their standard Z308.1-2015 on what first aid kits Class A and Class B should include. That said, it may be time for you to re-evaluate your current first aid program.
A good first aid kit should include various wound care items like bandages, antiseptic, sterile eye flush and dressing packs, ointments and burn treatment. You’ll also want to be sure to have various instruments like scissors, tweezers and tourniquets on hand should an emergency arise.
Many employers may also be required to have CPR and defibrillators accessible in the event of sudden cardiac arrest. Having the ability to perform these life-saving measures until emergency personnel arrive may mean the difference between a worker’s life and death.
Don’t forget about the aftermath of an incident at work. Keep your first aid kit stocked with a biohazard kit, disposable gloves and clothing, disinfectant, cleaners and disposal supplies for immediate and effective cleanup.
By reassessing your first aid program you’ll have the opportunity to ensure you have the necessary items on hand should an emergency strike. You’ll also want to prepare your team with the first aid training they need to feel confident in critical situations.
