After all other hazards have been eliminated or engineered out, your workers need protective apparel to perform their tasks the safest way possible. This means work clothing designed to protect them from job-related hazards like fire, electricity, traffic or dangerous chemicals. Protective apparel can include high visibility apparel, safety vests, HAZMAT gear, disposable suits, rainwear, flame-resistant clothing, jackets and more.
OSHA requires employers to provide and pay for personal protective equipment and protective apparel in CFR 29 1910.132. It’s the law.
“Protective equipment, including personal protective equipment for eyes, face, head, and extremities, protective clothing, respiratory devices, and protective shields and barriers, shall be provided, used, and maintained in a sanitary and reliable condition wherever it is necessary by reason of hazards of processes or environment, chemical hazards, radiological hazards, or mechanical irritants encountered in a manner capable of causing injury or impairment in the function of any part of the body through absorption, inhalation or physical contact.”
Choose protective clothing and apparel that fits employees well. Ill-fitting garments can be hot, bulky, and cumbersome and may even get snagged on equipment leading to increased risk of injury. Be sure to train your crew on how to properly use, care for and maintain the PPE necessary for their work.
